The authors studied the changes in circulating thyroid hormones in 15 young people with diabetes mellitus who had metabolic disturbances after discontinuation of insulin. Fifteen patients were divided into two groups by measuring circulating C-peptide values. The first group of seven patients did not have residual β-cell function, and the second group of eight patients had residual β-cell function. To ensure depletion of the hypodermic medium-acting insulin, only patients were given water-soluble insulin two days prior to admission. At 17:00 on the day of admission, the patient received the last insulin and started fasting from 20:00 onwards. Insulin at night is started at 22-24 infusion, the infusion rate is adjusted just in the morning when the blood glucose concentration to normal. The insulin was then stopped for 12 hours, during which time the patient was fasted and bedridden.
