Glucose transporters (GLUTs) is a carrier protein that mediates the transport of glucose across the plasma membrane. Its protein family is widely distributed on the membranes of human and mammalian tissues. Among them, GLUT1 and GLUT3 are responsible for glucose transport in the brain. Studies have shown that, after hypoxic-ischemic brain damage, GLUT1 and GLUT3 protein expression increased, to maintain energy supply to the brain tissue, has an important neuroprotective effect. This review summarizes the characteristics of GLUTs and their protective effects on brain.
