《吕氏家塾读诗记》以诗史互证为治经方法,注重以史解诗,借史论阐明诗旨,将史料与诗篇相对证,以诗篇明辩史料之误,从而形成了详审精切的学术特点。但同时吕氏也因过于信赖《诗序》而指摘史料与诗篇不合,质疑甚至误读史料。《吕氏家塾读诗记》这一经学特点的形成,既有汉儒经学传统、二程学术理路以及家学渊源的影响,也深受婺学尊古重史的学术传统影响。以吕祖谦为首的婺州学人承袭并发展了传统诗学,成为平衡宋代诗学的另一股力量,使之不致因一味疑经改经而走向极端,同时为后世《诗经》研究的全面发展存续了生机。
