Retinal blood vessels are the only small blood vessels in the human body that can be directly observed under non-invasive conditions. Cardiovascular diseases are mainly a group of common diseases that threaten human health and life based on small blood vessel diseases. For more than a century, researchers have been devoting themselves to searching for the intrinsic relationship between the two and expecting to detect or even predict the occurrence, development and outcome of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases by fundus examination. This article reviews the history of related research, briefly enumerates the puzzles and challenges encountered in this field of research at this stage, and hopes to draw attention and discussion in such research in ophthalmology and related departments, to work together and make breakthroughs.
