Computer control has become a major advance in power technology. Microprocessors have replaced many of the functions previously performed by mechanical relays and other conventional electrical equipment on locomotives newly manufactured by two major U.S. manufacturers. These tiny computers help locomotives reduce fuel consumption and increase train traction weight. They accurately determine the points of failure that occur during operation, thus simplifying repairs and reducing maintenance costs. At present, there may already be a lot of microprocessor control devices installed on the old locomotives that are being modified. More recently, the RailWay Supply Association has facilities on display in Chicago
