Objective To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of 24-hour Holter arrhythmia in the elderly. Methods From January 1992 to September 1996, 465 cases of Holter monitoring were performed 24h, and the results were statistically analyzed and compared between the elderly group (≥60 years old) and the non-elderly group (≤60 years old). Results The incidence of atrial contraction, ventricular premature ventricular contraction, atrial tachycardia and short atrial tachycardia were significantly higher in the elderly group than in the non-elderly group (P <0.05 or P <0.01) The incidence of anterior contraction was the highest, 93.9%. The incidence of premature ventricular contraction and atrial tachycardia were 44.9% and 65.9% respectively. Conclusion Elderly people are more likely to find various kinds of arrhythmias than non-elderly people. It is necessary to conduct regular in-hospital and out-of-hospital surveillance to reduce the incidence of sudden death in elderly patients.
