Shell moulding has opened a new field for the foundry industry. Problems arising from using native materials in the new process were Studied from the standpoint of lower mould cast, improving cast surface. Tests have shown that our best sands for foundry common use are not quite suitable for shell moulding use and have to be modified by miting with a portion of ground quartz to raise its fineness number. Purified sand will raised the cold strength of the shell, and the organic acids are better than inorganic acids used in purifying the sands. Resin specified for plastic industries is available and may be used for dumping method to make shell. An attempt to find a substitute for phenol-formaldehyde resin was made and furfuryl alcohol resin seemed to be proper. Wetting agent for sand-resin miting is necessary. Furfural with the additive is used and proved to be adequate under some conditions.
