Carbios, France, announced on December 3, 2015 that an enzymatic process was developed that would allow 100% depolymerization of amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based commercial products into their original monomers: fine Terephthalic acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol. The process uses highly selective enzymes, eliminating the need for sorting steps and providing a promise of 100% recycle. PET is widely used in the production of plastic bottles and other packaging, however the traditional techniques for implementing PET waste recycling are very sensitive to other polymer and impurity contamination and result in lower quality secondary products. this
