中国传统绘画发展到元代,无论是绘画的技巧还是绘画的理论研究都已进入了成熟和发达的阶段。尤其在山水画方面,可谓名家辈出,名作涌泉。中国传统的画史研究对于明代这一时期的发展向来只重视文人一边的表现,对于活跃在明朝初、中期的宫廷内外职业画家的作品,往往未予注意。
