OBJECTIVE: To compare the urinary flow parameters measured by free urination and transurethral urinary pressure flow to investigate the effect of catheter on urinary flow. METHODS: Forty-seven patients with urologic symptoms were enrolled. Group 1 consisted of 11 patients who were able to urinate during free urination and not able to urinate at the time of pressure-flow measurement. Group 2 consisted of 36 patients with two examinations urinating (including 5 pediatric patients). Each patient underwent free voiding (no catheter) and pressure flow rate (with catheter) 2 tests. The maximal Qmax, Qave, residual urine (PVR), excreted urine (VV), and maximal urinary flow (Tmax) were then compared between the 2 exams. Results: 1 1 adult (23%) patients with urinary catheter can not urinate. Twenty-one patients (66%) had urination during 2 examinations. The comparison of 2 urinary flow parameters showed that there were significant differences in Qmax, Qave, Tmax and PVR (P <0.05). VV difference was not statistically significant (P> 0.05). There was no significant difference in the five parameters of the two examinations among the five children (P> 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Adult urinary catheters have effects on Qmax, Qave and PVF measurements of urinary flow. Urinary flow in children less impact on the determination of urine. Therefore, in order to rule out the impact of urinary catheter on urinary flow in adults, free urination should be routinely performed before pressure flow rate measurement. Urine flow parameters
