Excitatory amino acids (EAA), mainly glutamic acid and aspartic acid, are released extracellularly from neurons in the axons after ischemia or trauma. These EAAs cause a series of reactions that cause secondary brain damage. EAA receptor antagonists can reduce the formation of local brain edema after nerve injury.
