Margaret Drabble’s novel “Waterfall” has received much attention from the critics for its content and formal experimentation. This paper argues that the existing comments all obstruct the reflection on tradition and innovation embodied in the whole work because they focus too much on the non-traditional factors in the novel. Generally speaking, “Waterfall” shows the growth process of a woman writer and is a search of how female artists can find themselves in the patriarchal society and break through in the male writing tradition. Drabble advocates that women writers should always take tradition seriously, seek for themselves in the culture of the other, pursue self-identity and seek new ways of artistic expression, and recognize the other while building oneself and construct oneself Integrity. Innovate in tradition and create new tradition in innovation.
