Objective To analyze the micronuclei of peripheral blood lymphocytes in 223 radiation workers. Methods Totally 223 radiographers from medical and health institutions and enterprises in Guangdong Province were used as research objects to determine the micronucleus rate by routine culture method. The normal reference value of peripheral blood micronucleus rate in healthy adults was taken as control to compare the difference of micronucleus rate between them. Results The frequencies of micronucleated cells and micronuclei in peripheral blood lymphocytes were 3.27 ‰ and 3.43 ‰, respectively, which were significantly different from the normal reference values (P <0.01). The differences among the radiation workers The difference was statistically significant (P <0.05 or P <0.01). There was no significant difference between different genders (P> 0.05). Conclusion Low doses of ionizing radiation can cause the increase of micronuclei of peripheral blood lymphocytes in radiation workers. The protection of radiation workers should be strengthened.
