Matthew and Hunter are two active volcanoes located on the southernmost rim of the Neo-Hebrides in the Southwest Pacific. They are distinctly different from the other volcanoes of the island arc, mainly Quaternary tholeiitic basaltic volcanoes. The two volcanoes associated with the Neo-Hebrides subduction zone in geodynamics are also close to the southern margin of the expanding ridges of the North Fiji basin. Both volcanic rocks are composed of acidic, medium-kalium calc-alkaline orogenic andesite. The rocks contain inclusions of different compositions (pyroxene and gabbro consolidation and syncytium inclusions). This paper, for the first time, systematically studies petrology and geochemistry of volcanic rocks and their inclusions in the area.
