The authors note that neurodegenerative features of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are present in patients with Down Syndrome (DS) and the incidence of leukemia is significantly increased: by studying the viability of lymphocytes of DS and AD patients after X-ray treatment, it was found that Both were abnormally sensitive to X-rays (P <0.0001 and 0.004) and were not sensitive to some other primary neuronal degenerative diseases such as xerophthalopathies (XP), telangiectasia and Cockayne syndrome Comparisons were made between these cells showing abnormal sensitivity to DNA damage factors. In XP patients, these phenomena may reflect defects in the repair of induced DNA damage. Therefore, the disease may also be defective repair of damaged DNA lead to an increased incidence of leukemia and premature death of nerve cells like AD.
