辐射加工在福建起步较迟,近几年来发展较快,现已建和在建的辐照中心有4座,其中2座设计容量18.5PBq(500kCi),1座11.1PBq(300kCi),还有1座1.85PBq(50kCi)。第1座辐照装置于1984年7月在福州市郊的福建省稻麦研究所建成,初装钴源约3×10~(14)Bq,后加大至1.48PBq,今年又要增加7.4×10~(14)Bq。几年来该装置为福建省的食品、果蔬食用菌、水产品等辐照保鲜,板栗、桂元干、医药品辐射杀虫灭菌,材料辐照改性等开发研究作出贡献,还辐射加工大蒜、洋葱等约2,000吨,一次性医疗用品几百万套(件),获得较好的社会和经济效益。
