Marcus Rediker (1951-) is a professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is one of the important representatives of the American historiography “New Social History” and his research focuses on social history, labor history and maritime history. Through the use of the Atlantic horizon, he advocates the social history of the underlying research. His research body is the general working class in the Atlantic world, including African slaves, white contract laborers, sailors and pirates. Influenced by representatives of British Marxist schools such as Edward Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm, he held a critical position on capitalist society. In addition, he explored the class consciousness and initiative of the general working class in the Atlantic world. He is also one of the leading historians studying the slave trade and the slave trade in the Atlantic. Major works include: “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Commercial Sailors, Pirates and the Anglo-American Marine World from 1700 to 1750”, “Skeptics of All Nations: The Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age,” “Slave Ships: A Human History,” “ Amistad’s Rebellion: An Attic Odyssey Between Servitude and Freedom, ”and Atlases on the Atlantic: Sailors, Pirates and Motley Crews in the Age of Voyage." ~ (1) This interview mainly explores the course of the growth and research of Professor Redick.
