It has been shown in many species of animals that endogenous opioids may be involved in the physiological regulation of prolactin secretion. For example, injection of exogenous opioids and opioids (including beta-endorphin) stimulates prolactin release, whereas specific opiate antagonists (naloxone) block this release.
