Summary There are two types of phagocytes that play an important role in the body’s defensive system. One is the smaller polymorphonuclear neutrophils, and the other is the bulky, mononuclear phagocytes. The latter is widely distributed and plays an important role in body defense, clearance and immunity and has drawn people’s attention. At the end of the nineteenth century, Мечников first noted the close relationship between mononuclear-phagocytic cells in the blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes and spleen and macrophages in whole body connective tissue, suggesting that there are “macrophages system”.
