In nature, herbivores insects themselves have some hidden protection, which brings some difficulties for pest control. Parasitic natural enemies (parasitic wasps, etc.) can use olfactory perception of chemical communication from hosts and plants to search, locate, discover and parasitize target pests. This review focuses on the defense strategies developed by the synergistic evolution of plants and pests and the ecological functions of plant volatile insecticidal substances in the tertiary nutritional relationships of plants, insects and natural enemies. In addition, the signaling molecules involved in volatiles, their basic characteristics, The molecular regulation mechanisms of terpene release as major components, the spatial and temporal expression specificity and diversity of plant tissues, and their application prospects are all described in detail.
