On August 3 last year, the Tokyo District Court in Japan held the first trial of a case involving jurors. The defendant is a 72-year-old man. Recently, the number of malicious cases caused by the elderly has markedly increased. According to the “White Paper on Crime” promulgated by the Japanese Ministry of Justice in 2000 (2008), if the number of elderly criminals aged 65 and over in 1988 was set at 100, the number of elderly criminals aged over 65 in 1988 almost doubled to 199.2, while that of 65 The number of people arrested and being prosecuted by the courts over the age of 49 was 491.6 and 742.3 respectively, which quadrupled to 6.5. The reason for the increase in the number of cruel and disabled elderly can not be explained solely by the increase in the number of elderly people.
