Laos is a predominantly agricultural country with a weak industrial base. In the late 1980s, the Lao government began to actively promote the reform, further readjust its economic structure and implement the principle of giving priority to the development of agriculture and forestry, while appropriately increasing the proportion of industry and service industries in the national economy. In the 1990s, Laos continued to implement the line of comprehensive reform and worked hard to make a transition to a market economy with some improvements in the national economy and people’s livelihood. It is estimated that in mid-1997, Laos will strive to become a member of the Association of South-East Asian Nations. Observers believe that Laos’s accession to ASEAN will create conditions for the country to further deepen reforms and develop its economy.
