Recently, Japan’s Kawasaki Iron and Steel Institute successfully developed a stainless steel. This stainless steel is made only by changing the chemical composition of the 13% chromium stainless steel. Specifically: the carbon and nitrogen content from 0.23 to 0.33% down to 0.1% or less, the manganese content increased from 0.4% to 1.5%. Due to changes in the chemical composition of the steel, even if the tempering heat treatment is omitted, the same wear resistance and strength as the original steel can be obtained. Allegedly, this stainless steel can be used to make wheels, knives, valves, rails and chains.
