The levels of serum DHEA in 31 patients with SLE and 22 normal controls were detected by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and acridine orange staining, and their effects on apoptosis of lymphocytes in vitro were detected. It was found that the level of serum DHEA in patients with SLE was significantly lower than that of the normal controls, and the rate of lymphocyte apoptosis was significantly increased. Physiological concentration of DHEA could reduce lymphocyte apoptosis in SLE patients in vitro. The results suggest that the apoptosis rate of lymphocytes in SLE patients is higher than normal, and the low level of DHEA may be one of the reasons leading to the increase of lymphocyte apoptosis rate in SLE patients.
