Mitochondria are cellular energy processors that play an important role in maintaining the normal energy metabolism and survival of cells. Mitochondrial dysfunction can cause apoptosis and necrosis of cardiomyocytes. The opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) is the key to mitochondrial dysfunction. It is closely related to the occurrence and development of various cardiac diseases. This article reviews the composition, regulation and function of mPTP and its relationship with heart disease.
