为了防止液化石油气容器在使用中产生微小裂纹,采用自动焊接和焊后退火热处理是有效的。由于可以满足这种工作条件,近来卧式圆筒容器的制造有增加的趋势。为了提高圆筒的贮藏能力,容器也进一步向大型化发展。与此同时,发生了不能将全部焊缝同时退火的问题,因而出现了将容器的焊缝分段分步热处理的方法。这就是把前面工序完成的适当大小的区段退火后再组装焊接,然后将最终焊缝退火。
