昆明至新加坡国际通道是马来西亚总理马哈蒂尔1995年提出的,他设想打通新加坡至昆明铁路,使东南亚铁路网与东亚铁路网联通,经中国与中亚和西亚铁路网相连,形成泛亚铁路。泛亚铁路不仅将加强亚洲大陆各国间的联系,还可开辟东南亚至欧洲的捷径。这一建议提出后有关国家纷纷响应,同时也得到联合国亚太经合组织、亚洲银行和东盟等国际机构的支持。
International Channel from Kunming to Singapore was put forward by Malaysia’s Prime Minister Mahathir in 1995. He envisaged opening up the Singapore-Kunming Railway, linking the Southeast Asia Railway Network with the East Asia Railway Network, linking China and Central Asia and Western Asia to form the Trans-Asian Railway . The Trans-Asian Railway will not only strengthen the ties between the countries in the Asian continent, but also open up a shortcut from Southeast Asia to Europe. After the proposal put forward the countries concerned have responded, but also by the United Nations, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Asian Bank and ASEAN and other international agencies for their support.
