A group of substances called perfluorocarbons improve the ability of oxygen to carry oxygen in the bloodstream of mammals, including humans. These substances act as carriers of pure oxygen, but they must be passed through the capillary network when they are made into an emulsion of 0.1 micron diameter particles. Oxygen dissolved by it is diffused into the hypoxic tissue by diffusion. The potential of perfluorinated oxygen delivery is great, especially under hyperbaric oxygen conditions: after all the blood in the mouse has been replaced with this substance, the rat survives without red blood cells in its circulation.
