Japan’s NEC Corp. announced in mid-February that it is the first company in the world to develop a 1,000-megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip. This chip stores the amount of information equivalent to 4,000 pages of newspapers. At present, the mainstream of dynamic random access memory chips in the semiconductor market is 4 megabit. The more storage capacity of a memory chip, the harder it is to process. As NEC develops more than 1,000 megabit dynamic random access memory chips in computers and home appliances. Therefore, the manufacturers are scrambling to study this chip. At the end of last year, NEC announced that it will launch a dynamic random access memory of 1,000 megabytes in 1998 and put it into mass production in 2000.
