Jealousy fears enable pro-social behavior because individuals try to evade the potentially damaging effects of jealousy. However, help behavior can only increase if envy is likely to be malicious rather than benign. Instead of increasing their help to the general public, people in better conditions only increased their help with potentially jealousy, demonstrating that pro-social behavior did increase because of jealous fear. Jealousy fears provide a useful group function as it triggers pro-social behavior, which can inhibit the potentially devastating effects of jealousy while helping to improve the situation of those in worse hands.
