June 29, 1873 (Tongzhi, June 5, 12) Ambassadors of all nations in Beijing held an unprecedented ceremony with Zulu at the Ziguang Pavilion. It is unprecedented because the “Three Knells and Nine Knocks” gift, which represents thousands of years of historical and cultural tradition, has been scrapped and replaced by etiquette similar to that of modern international diplomatic etiquette, and China was forced again in this ceremonial struggle Take a step toward modernization. Even more noteworthy is that the Vice Minister of Japan, the Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Japan, differs from other foreign ministers in that he is summoned individually for the ceremony. After Meiji Restoration, Japan first collided with China on the issue of etiquette. This confrontation ended in a compromise by China.
