After the Opium War, Western missionaries came to China with the establishment of a treaty system and established schools and missions. As one of the first five ports of commerce opened up in Ningbo, Ningbo first set up a female school in 1844 and was known as “Ningbo Girls’ Private School”. Interestingly, the founder of China’s first female school was not a Chinese, but a foreign Christian missionary.
