阙里庙学初建于魏文帝黄初二年,宋真宗大中祥符年间重建之后,主要用来教诲孔氏子弟。宋哲宗元祐年间吸收颜、孟二氏子孙入学,成为孔、颜、孟三氏子孙学习的场所。明万历十六年允许曾氏子孙加入,三氏学发展为四氏学。自宋至明,习业主体虽由一姓扩大为四姓,但其作为圣贤子孙习业场所的性质始终没有改变,清代仍是如此。然而除此之外,庙学在管理形式等方面却在不断变化,以明代最著。在明代科举社会的强力影响下,自正统九年始,阙里庙学的管理方式、办学取向以及岁贡、科举、考选等具体环节与府、州、县儒学渐有趋同之势。但四氏圣裔是一特殊利益群体,在诸多方面可以获享政策上的优惠,所以阙里庙学的地位始终高于一般儒学。
