中国古代有“芹献”和“采芹”的典故,“芹献”语出《列子·杨朱》,是送礼或献策时所用的谦语,意指自以为不错,但对方未必看得上的意思。“采芹”出自《诗经·鲁颂·泮水》中的“思乐泮水,薄采其芹”之句,后指考中的秀才能够入泮读书。不过这里的“芹”均不是我们现在吃的芹菜(旱芹),而是指生长于水边的水芹。旱芹原产于地中海沿岸,自汉代传入中国,水芹则原产于中国。
