Genetic engineers in California, USA, have developed a new tomato variety that can be stored for 2 to 3 months without rot. Biologists say using this tomato genetic manipulation technique can be used to greatly extend the shelf life of other fruits and vegetables such as bananas and apples, and delay flower blight. Scientists plant tomato plants with genetic material that blocks the functioning of a gene that causes tomatoes to mature.
