On June 9, 1938, in order to prevent the Japanese invaders from going westward, the Kuomintang army opened the Yellow River Embankment in the northeastern Huayuankou, Zhengzhou, causing the surging Yellow River water to flow south-east through Zhongmou. The Zhongmou, Weishi, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces over 40 counties into a vast expanse of water.
