It has been observed that cancer-associated malnutrition could lead to a reduction of the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy, suggesting that early and aggressive nutritional support is necessary for cancer patients with malnutrition. The use of chemotherapy drugs may result in gastrointestinal dysfunction, which could affect the absorption and digestion of nutrients, further worsening malnutrition. The purpose of nutritional support in combination with chemotherapy is to ameliorate the nutritional deficiencies of patients and improve their tolerance of chemotherapy, thus improving the quality of life of patients. In this article, the metabolic abnormalities of cancer patients, the effects of malnutrition during chemotherapy and the current research on nutritional support for chemotherapy are reviewed.
