福建土楼的兴筑,在明代中叶以后才达到高潮。今日所见到的闽西南地区的土楼,大致有方楼、圆楼、五凤楼、椭圆楼、八角楼、半月楼等形式。其中以方楼、圆楼、五凤楼数量最多,形制也比较丰富。五凤楼形态特殊,等级较高,受到形势风水观的影响较深。客家人与闽南人的土楼,在布局上有一些差异,反映了两种民系不同的族群性格。闽西南土楼,虽然使用古老的夯筑技术,但形成的历史并不悠久,因此,各种类型的土楼之间并不存在一种由此及彼的演化关系,惟其如此,才形成今日所见到的丰富形态。
