Practice has proved that for many tasks, combat simulation is a useful tool. These tasks include: research and assessment of strategic concepts; analysis of selected forces / tasks / planned deployment of force levels; professional military education in decision-making processes and doctrine; and tactical training and operational doctrine. In these mission areas, the key issue of studying a large-scale combat simulation system is how to simulate a new weapon system that fulfills a user’s intended mission. This article will provide a way to improve modeling and simulation performance that correctly reflects the role of the Navy’s newest combat system (AEGIS) in air combat (AAW). The expected result is a comprehensive AAW model that better reflects the performance of current combat systems and reflects the performance of new systems introduced to the Navy. The intent of this article is not to provide a model design or to study a combat simulation performance specification. Instead, the focus of this article is on the process of studying and manipulating such large-scale simulation problems for the AAW structure used to address this issue. This article describes ways to solve five key aspects. These five aspects are: (1) The technical understanding of major weapon systems; (2) The operational evaluation of integrated operational concepts; (3) The maximum utilization of operational simulation systems; (4) The operational simulation participants and needs; (5) Simulation techniques.
