学界通常认为,近代以来,随着长江流域被迫对外开放,西方近代轮船大规模地介入内地市场,其凭借技术优势与不平等条约护航给中国传统民船业以致命的冲击,进而导致原来依赖民船为生的大批民众失去生计,甚至成为近代革命的重要后备力量。然而,由于近代中国贸易格局演变、条约口岸制度安排、劳动力过剩、资本短缺以及区域航运,特别是内河航运区域自身特点等因素的影响,面对航运业近代化变迁,长江中下游地区传统民船业不但没有被近代轮船所取代,相反,在某种程度上还呈现出一定的发展之势。
