The Yugoslav Railway East-West Route (from Skopje to Belgrade, Zagreb, and to Rishbach from the east) transport capacity is saturated and unable to meet the growing transport needs. Therefore, the South Rail decided to build a second east-west trunk line in order to ease the pressure on existing lines. The first phase will build the new 43.5km line between Tuzla and Zvornik, which will have to cut a 4.8km long tunnel. This new line will shorten the 207km route in Tuzla-Belgrade to 177km. This artery leading to the Greek-Austrian border will be operational in 1988. The second phase of construction will take place in 1990, 50 km long from Zvornik to Valjevo. When all are completed, there will be a parallel Shinkansen to the south of the existing east-west trunk line.
