Modernity is to some extent a cohesion of urban life experiences. Bachman’s “Unexpected Land” is based on Berlin, which was divided in the Cold War era. With an exaggerated and absurd surrealistic approach, Bachman presents a distorted urban landscape, and through “accidental” “, ” Head to head walking "and other concepts to find out an accurate way to describe the human experience of the predicament of their own existence in the process of modernization. This is also in line with Bachmann’s poetic principle that modernity can only experience and can not speak (theorize) human suffering. The connotation of language must be continually updated and expanded itself in order to have the perception and expression of reality.
