Alex: Have you thought about any resolutions for the New Year?
Jenny: Oh I’ve given up on that. I used to do it every year when I was a kid.
Alex: So what made you stop?
Jenny: ①I could never stick to them.
Alex: Ha. ②What sort of resolutions did you make?
Jenny: Well, one year I decided I was going to have five servings of fruits and vegetables EVERY day, ③which tanked about mid January.
Alex: Oh no! Well, maybe you should try something a bit easier. Come on, let’s decide together some things we want to achieve next year.
Jenny: OK. Well what do you want to try to do?
Alex: I really need to read more. For my English class I have to do a bit of reading, but my goal is to read at least three novels throughout the semester.
Jenny: Sounds reasonable. How will you stick to it?
Alex: ④I will just allot a few hours each day and slowly get through it. What about you?
Jenny: I would like to do more writing. I used to write a lot, but just kind of stopped a few years ago.
Alex: Oh yeah? What type of writing?
Jenny: Short stories, poetry, maybe even a book, depending on how much time I have throughout the year.
Alex: Well go on, do it. Make a promise to yourself.
Jenny: OK. I swear to produce something of personal value in writing as a form of self expression.
Alex: Good! That’s the attitude you need. When you make a promise with yourself you will be less likely to break it. Is there anything else you want to do?
Jenny: ⑤I guess I need to get fitter. The only sport I like is swimming.
Alex: That’s alright. Swimming is great for keeping you fit.
Jenny: OK, starting next year I’m going to swim at least four times a week.
Alex: ⑥That might be overdoing it a bit.
Jenny: OK, three times a week. What other resolutions do you want to make?
Alex: Last month I went to a rock concert and it was unbelievable. So I would like to go to more live concerts.
Jenny: Sounds good. We can go together. Let’s check which bands are touring soon and go buy tickets next week.
Alex: Great! There is no better feeling than seeing your favorite band play live.
Jenny: OK, ⑦so we are all set. Let’s hope we can stick to it.
