During the Operation Desert Storm, a large-scale food-borne gastroenteritis broke out in the U.S. Air Forces stationed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, directly affecting 648 air force personnel. The epidemic occurred on the night of January 20, 1991. A total of 192 patients in the emergency room were surveyed by base environmental health officials to find out when diarrhea, vomiting, headache, fever and other symptoms occurred, where the barracks were, when they arrived in Saudi Arabia and all the food they had eaten in the past three days.
