湘红麻2号是中国农科院麻类研究所从1972年起分别用红麻7号与粤红3号和非洲红麻与红麻20号杂交的后代,进行复式杂交选育出的纺织、造纸兼用红麻新品种。1989年通过审定,定名为湘红麻2号。产量和品质该品种在1985～1987年参加9省41点次的全国红麻新品种区试,平均亩产熟麻243.6公斤,较对照红麻青皮3号原种增产22.47％,居参试品种的第一位。
