I recently heard a story from Stephen Glenn about a famous research scientist who had made several very important medical breakthroughs. He was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter who asked him why he thought he was able to be so much more creative than the average person. What set him so far apart from others?
He responded that, in his opinion, it all came from an experience with his mother that occurred when he was about two years old. He had been trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip on the slippery bottle and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor — a real sea of milk!

More than 2 million US teenagers have suffered a serious bout (发作) of depression in the past year, according to a federal government survey released on Tuesday.
On average, 8.5 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 described having had a major depressive episode in the previous year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported.
But there were“striking differences” by sex, with 12.7 percent of girls and 4.6 percent of boys affected.
Depression is the leading cause of suicide, which in turn is the third￣leading cause of death for 15￣to 24￣year￣olds in the United States.
“Combined 2004 to 2006 data show that rates of past year major depressive experience among youths aged 12 to 17 generally increased with increasing age,” the researchers wrote.
Researchers at SAMHSA and RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, prepared the report using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
More than 67,700 youths aged 12 to 17 answered questions about mood and depression. They were also asked to rate how depression affected them using the Sheehan Disability Scale, which measures impact on family, friends, chores at home, work and school.
Researchers defined a major depressive episode as two weeks or longer of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure, and at least four other symptoms (症状) such as problems with sleep, energy, concentration or self￣image.
Nearly half of the teenagers who had major depression said it severely damaged their ability to function in at least one of the areas on the disability scale.
“Fortunately, depression responds very well to early intervention and treatment,” SAMHSA Administrator Terry Cline said in a statement.

The BRICK Awards are given each year to young people who make our world a better place. These youth service awards were presented recently to twelve young people for their community action projects.
For the first time, the BRICK Awards were presented on an American TV show. Twelve people under the age of 25 from the United States and Canada won awards of 10,000 dollars to continue their work.

By 2010, spending on Internet advertising will account for 10% of total US ad dollars, according to “The Changing Face of Advertising in the Digital Age” from Parks Associates.
Roughly 21% of Internet users consider Internet advertising to be the most effective ad format. It has gone beyond traditional media, such as newspapers, magazines and radio.
Behavioral targeting with a variety of sounds makes the channel attractive. “Because the Internet is an interactive platform and offers rich consumer usage data, advertisers can improve their ad target ability and achieve better results,” said Parks Associates research analyst Harry Wang.

Even with hit shows such as “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, ABC is tightening its belt as it weathers the U.S. economic downturn and tries to remain relevant in an industry challenged by digital entertainment.
“We are in one of the worst economies in 70 years. We are looking at everything we can possibly do to be more efficient and more effective,”ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson told reporters on Friday.
“We have to look at everything across the board from cost cutting to (using) other platforms for smart ways to broker (协调) our efforts. It is an ongoing process. It is not a one time thing.”
McPherson, attending the networks’ semi￣annual presentation to critics, said last year’s fivemonth strike by Hollywood screenwriters had “really hurt everybody” in the traditional television industry, and he acknowledged the networks had lost viewers to other forms of entertainment.
“The world has changed under these businesses and we need to be incredibly diligent and confident in what we do, otherwise we will be left by the wayside.” he said. “Tomorrow is here, now, and we really need to figure it out now and move forward.”
ABC, a unit of Walt Disney Co, has lost about 9.7 percent of its prime time audience in the 2008￣9 season compared with the same stage last year.
With the exception of current ratings leader CBS, the other two major U.S. networks Fox and NBC have also lost similar percentages since the 2008￣9 season started last September.
McPherson said he hoped ABC would continue to “take chances” on shows such as “Lost” and “Dancing with the Stars” that were seen as daring when they were shown for the first time. But recent new entries, such as “Pushing Daisies,”“Eli Stone” and “Dirty Sexy Money,” failed to resonate with viewers and were canceled.
Despite the growing trend of watching television on iPods, on the Internet and on mobile phones, McPherson said ABC’s main focus remained on broadcast.

More than 2 million US teenagers have suffered a serious bout (发作) of depression in the past year, according to a federal government survey released on Tuesday.
On average, 8.5 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 described having had a major depressive episode in the previous year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported.
But there were“striking differences” by sex, with 12.7 percent of girls and 4.6 percent of boys affected.
Depression is the leading cause of suicide, which in turn is the third￣leading cause of death for 15￣to 24￣year￣olds in the United States.
“Combined 2004 to 2006 data show that rates of past year major depressive experience among youths aged 12 to 17 generally increased with increasing age,” the researchers wrote.
Researchers at SAMHSA and RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, prepared the report using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
More than 67,700 youths aged 12 to 17 answered questions about mood and depression. They were also asked to rate how depression affected them using the Sheehan Disability Scale, which measures impact on family, friends, chores at home, work and school.
Researchers defined a major depressive episode as two weeks or longer of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure, and at least four other symptoms (症状) such as problems with sleep, energy, concentration or self￣image.
Nearly half of the teenagers who had major depression said it severely damaged their ability to function in at least one of the areas on the disability scale.
“Fortunately, depression responds very well to early intervention and treatment,” SAMHSA Administrator Terry Cline said in a statement.

The BRICK Awards are given each year to young people who make our world a better place. These youth service awards were presented recently to twelve young people for their community action projects.

By 2010, spending on Internet advertising will account for 10% of total US ad dollars, according to “The Changing Face of Advertising in the Digital Age” from Parks Associates.
Roughly 21% of Internet users consider Internet advertising to be the most effective ad format. It has gone beyond traditional media, such as newspapers, magazines and radio.

Even with hit shows such as “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, ABC is tightening its belt as it weathers the U.S. economic downturn and tries to remain relevant in an industry challenged by digital entertainment.
