The Japanese government predicts that Japan’s crude steel output this year will reach 110 million tons, setting a new high in 5 years. According to the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry survey of Japanese steel mills’ production plans, Japan’s crude steel output will reach 28.48 million tons in the fourth quarter of this year, up 9.9% from a year earlier and up 2.7% sequentially. This will be the highest quarterly production since the third quarter of 2008, when quarterly production was 30.45 million tonnes. Based on this calculation, the total crude steel output in Japan for 2013 will reach 1.109 billion tons, the highest since 2008.
