Fire is one of the main causes of the destruction of forests in Turkey’s history. About 90% of the country’s forest fires take place in areas around the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea and around Marmara. June to November each year is a forest fire prone phase, the reason is that the Mediterranean climate, its main features are: high temperature in summer, dry, rainy, full sunshine; warm and humid in winter, almost concentrated on the annual precipitation most. Turkey has 20.2 million hectares of forest area, accounting for 26% of the country’s land area. Forty-four percent of the forest is arbor forest and the rest are non-timber or residual forest. One percent of the forest fires were caused by lightning and 99% were artificial, of which five per cent were careless and 43 per cent were caused by deliberate firepower. Fifty-five count as accident.
