The superior properties of the composite make it play a growing role in the rail vehicle structure, especially the interior. Composites are used for a wide range of interior components such as side and interior trim, seats, tables, window frames, luggage racks and luggage compartments, bulkheads, floors and ceilings, hallways, toilet cubicles and stairs. Taken together, they can reduce considerable weight, bring excellent performance and economic benefits. Dr. Joe Carruthers, director of rail vehicles at the NewRail R & D Center at Newcastle University, recently estimated that a 10% reduction in weight for urban rail vehicles will result in a 7% reduction in energy consumption and an average cost savings of $ 100,000 per vehicle.
