High and low, rising and falling are the common images in Stendhal’s works. The geographical position not only carries the ups and downs of the plot of the novel but also the sudden changes in the real situation of the characters, more echoes the spiritual realm and tendency: the major events, the spiritual world Shock, comprehend and change, often occur in the height or deep place. Peaks, towers, prisons, churches, caves, trees, or mountains encircling the land are poetically suggestive of unspeakable and invisible objects. In the background of romanticism, this thesis analyzes the profound meaning of various geographical positions in Stendhal’s works from the perspectives of psychoanalysis, archetypal criticism and phenomenological research, and explains their symbolic role in the hero’s spiritual adventure.
